Discovery has put together a toolkit to help you, our financial advisers, use social media and it will be available soon.

Without distracting you from your core purpose of providing sound financial advice, it is important for you to keep up with the latest trends and practices. If used correctly, social media can be a useful business tool for you to connect with and contact your clients.

This toolkit will provide:

  • A detailed explanation of the three major social networks: LinkedIn, Twitter and Facebook
  • General guidelines and tips on how to make the most of your social media presence and to build exceptional profiles across these networks
  • Specific guidelines for conduct on these public platforms as Discovery ambassadors
  • Help to navigate the relevant regulatory and compliance issues when engaging on social media

A new generation of healthcare specialists rises through innovative scholarship (Continued)

Bheki Mendlula, one of nine siblings who grew up in a remote part of KwaZulu-Natal, has returned home, bringing back more to his community, as a qualified optometrist now, than he left with.

He supervises eye clinics serving over 230 000 people in the impoverished Ingwavuma district. Bheki is a graduate of the Umthombo Youth Development Foundation, a scholarship scheme that helps to build healthcare capacity.

The scheme aims to address the region’s severe shortages of qualified staff. It does this by identifying rural youth with potential to become healthcare professionals, making sure they succeed at university, and helping with integrating and keeping graduates at rural hospitals. After studying, the students return to work at one of the 10 hospitals in the Umkhanyakude, Zululand or Uthungulu districts.

One thing setting apart Umthombo from similar projects is its close collaboration with the community early in the process. Umthombo’s school outreach programme regularly visits students from grades 9-12 to spread awareness about the opportunity to study further. Interested students are expected to perform academically and also to reach out to hospitals in their area through community work. Once in university, beneficiaries receive comprehensive financial and mentoring support to make the most of their chances of successfully completing their degree. The mentorship programme, itself coordinated by an Umthombo graduate, enables students to regularly meet experienced mentors one on one to discuss any difficulties – whether academic, social or personal.

Umthombo’s commitment to mentorship is foundational to its success. Last year, Umthombo students achieved a 91% pass rate, their highest ever. This is remarkable given the many challenges the students face and the demanding standard of the degrees they pursue. This innovative bursary model also serves as a powerful economic injection back into their rural communities. Many students start new healthcare services in their area, which helps create new jobs. The success of the programme speaks for itself. Umthombo partnered with five hospitals in 2008; now it’s twelve. Student numbers have grown in this period from about 65 to 190. Umthombo graduates are role models in inspiring a new generation that witness their impact in the community.

Discovery has been involved in funding the Umthombo Youth Development Foundation since 2001. We’re excited to be part of creating a new generation of healthcare specialists.

In doing so, we also adhere to various requirements regulated by the Financial Services Board, the National Consumer Commission and the Council of Medical Schemes.

These requirements also govern the information we’re allowed to disclose to you and on whose instructions we’re allowed to act.
