The Inside Story

It’s hard to believe five years have passed since the infamous Lehman Brothers’ collapse that precipitated the financial crisis of 2008/09.

Although world markets have come a long way since then, there’s still much that needs to be addressed and changed.

At the time of writing, talks over Syria as well as the timing of the Fed’s tapering of the bond-buying programme are ongoing. For the most part, local markets have remained strong, despite being heavily dependent on the outside world.

Cape Town-based readers can get the ‘inside track’ on these and other issues facing investors in South Africa today by attending [THE INSIDERS] event at the Table Bay Hotel on Wednesday, 23 October. This is the first time the event will be held in Cape Town – following two successful events in Johannesburg over the last year. Former DA Leader Tony Leon, PIC CEO Elias Masilela and EY’s Director of Strategy & Innovation, Michael Lalor, will discuss the challenges and opportunities that SA faces right now. In this issue, Albie Morkel talks cricket and some of the plans he has for the future. Regular contributor Matthew Lester discusses the proposed new rules for tax-deductible contributions to retirement funds, effective March 2014. Well-known personal finance journalist Maya Fisher-French presented on financial literacy at our Women’s Day events last month and drew many queries from attendees looking for practical ways to improve their finances. Her article in this issue provides a no-nonsense, down-to-earth look at building wealth over the long term.

Enjoy the read.
